Our History
The Slate Belt Baptist Church was started by Pastor David C. Davenport having the first service on March 24, 1990 in the Wind Gap fire-hall. They church met in the Wind Gap fire-hall until December of 1996 when the church completed construction on their worship center at 1620 Church Road, Pen Argyl. Pastor David C. Davenport remained until March 31, 1999. On May 2, 1999 the church called Pastor Wesley J. McGuire to the pulpit. Pastor McGuire served faithfully as the Senior Pastor until March 20, 2005.
Nazareth Baptist Church was started by Scott J. Davis having the first service on November 12, 1995. During November of 1995 through March 13, 2005 the Church held services at the 2nd floor of the PNC Bank Building on Center Square in Nazareth.
In March 2005 both congregations voted to unify under the leadership of Senior Pastor, Scott Davis. The process of unifying began in October of 2004 when Pastor Davis began preaching in both churches from November until March when the churches unified. During that time, both churches took time to get to know each other. Several services were combined together along with a couple of dinners and fellowship times. This helped to test the water to see if the churches were compatible. After praying, having officers meetings, church meetings, and with much deliberation, both churches voted to unify. The road had only a few bumps, but the process has testified of the greatness of God. We are convinced that what has been accomplished here is exactly what God wanted for us. We anticipate great opportunities for the future and look forward to seeing what God has in store.
The Slate Belt Nazareth Baptist church had ground-breaking for their new building on March 14, 2010 for a 22,000 sq ft. addition. The building was completed in March of 2011. The addition has allowed the much needed space for the ministry to continue to grow. In March of 2015 we celebrated our 10th anniversary. Pastor Scott J. Davis remained until May of 2017. In December of 2018 the church called Pastor Steve Rebert as the new Lead Pastor of Slate Belt Church.
We continue the task of carrying out the “Great Commission” that Jesus gave the church just prior to His ascension saying “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matt 28:-19-20a)
Many lives have been changed, marriages restored and ministries have prospered. All bear witness to God’s pleasure with the efforts of these believers that God has called out for His service in the Slate Belt & Nazareth areas.
